Carola Dertnig geht es in ihren Arbeiten (Installationen, Videos und Performances) um künstlerische Prozesse – bezogen auf Geschichtsschreibung, Genres oder Perspektiven. Sie entwickelt Strukturen für fehlende Geschichten und erfindet Personen oder ganze Settings, die in Vergangenes eingreifen.

Dieser Katalog dokumentiert die Performances und Objekte der Ausstellung Donauspuren in der Landesgalerie Niederösterreich (19.10.2019–24.05.2020), in der Ausgrabungen eine Rolle spielen, die 2016/17 im Zuge der Errichtung der Landesgalerie durchgeführt wurden. Mittelalterliche sowie römische Fundstücke und Generationenwechsel durchdringen einander, um Überlegungen anzustellen: Was bedeutet das Einsickern von Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart – ist das schon Impuls genug, um die Gegenwart als Ausformung von Vergangenheit begreifen zu können? Wie deutlich ereignen sich Geschichtsverschiebungen? Welche Folgen haben Konstruktionen für Lebens- und Gestaltungsräume, wie verändern sie Wege und Routen, wie das Verhältnis von Stadt und Land? Über ein Hin- und Herspringen zwischen Generationen und Orten, Erinnerungen und Erfahrungen werden solche Geschichten von Dertnig in Beziehungen gesetzt und mannigfaltig sichtbar.

This anthology is a collection of twenty-one essays and conversations that weave in and out of the two key areas of research and teaching within performative fine art. They bring to light the conventions involved in the production, presentation, reception, and historicization of performance art, as well as the specific cultural and political implications. The various contributions also show how these conventions are produced through or within each artwork, independent from their specific contexts, offering ways of thinking beyond their usual frames of reference. At the same time they recognize the substantial work carried out by artists, critics, and theorists who have built on the meanings, references, and implications of performative thinking since the beginning of the "performative turn."

In 2010/11, a group of Vienna-based art practitioners (artists, art historians, and cultural theorists) embarked on a journey of experimental research, exploring the genealogical and political implications of the ways in which research rhetorics and policies are currently incorporated into the fields of contemporary art and art education. Troubling Research: Performing Knowledge in the Arts, a collection of “books” of essays and conversations, is the quirky and exhilarating outcome of this collaborative endeavor to render a “problematization” by interrogating the very conditions of the current upsurge of the art/research articulation.  

Michel Foucault once introduced problematization as a “specific work of thought” that transforms “a group of obstacles and difficulties into problems to which diverse solutions will attempt to produce a response.” For this project, the obstacles and difficulties in question were the terms “art” and “research” and their peculiar conjunction as “artistic” or “arts-based research.” As a result of this process, the understanding of individual artistic/theoretical practices was tested. Working both independently and as a collaborative entity, the group found itself negotiating and contesting each participant’s claim to knowledge in the context of art. The eventual responses to the problem of research proved to be both performative and troubling.

Historische und aktuelle Positionen der Performance in Österreich präsentiert die vorliegende Anthologie, in der erstmals die Bedeutung dieses Mediums für die heimische Kunstszene untersucht wird. Beleuchtet werden öffentliche wie subkulturelle Wiener Kunstszenen und deren Strahlkraft für die aktuelle Entwicklung. Wo steht Performance in Österreich heute, was sind die interessantesten Ansätze und Strategien, welche Querverbindungen zu anderen Kunsträumen lassen sich nachvollziehen und darstellen? Rund 40 Positionen werden in mehrseitigen Text- und Bildbeiträgen vorgestellt. Interviews mit ZeitzeugInnen, Kommentare von ExpertInnen und profunde Analysen runden das Gesamtbild ab.
